Memorial Rose Garden in Dardanup W.A
By the South West Rose Group

Several members of the South West Rose Group expressed a desire to create, design, build and maintain a Memorial Rose Garden. It was overwhelmingly voted for at a meeting in the latter half of 2006, and a sub committee was formed. Local shires were approached and Dardanup shire accepted the offer.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SITE

The historic Dardanup State School was built in 1896/7 situated on the Ferguson Valley Road, in the township of Dardanup about 10kms from Bunbury.
Made of brick and iron it is one of four (4) ever built in W.A. of this design. In 1988 the Bi- Centennial of W.A. a Project Grant from the Federal Government was made available to restore the building, the work was started by Mr Don Hewison and local volunteers, But before the project was completed unfortunately Mr Don Hewison was killed in a tragic train accident in 1991, and the site was named after him (The Don Hewison Centre) in his honour.
Finally in 2003 to 2006 the building was Heritage Listed.

The local Tourism Committee of Dardanup were looking for a suitable building as a Visitor and Information Centre for the Ferguson Valley and were delighted to be offered the “The Don Hewison Centre”. The South West Rose Group were equally delighted to be given this same site for there Memorial Rose Garden.

Work was started by the South West Rose Group in February 2007, and continued on in a part time situation for the next 12 months until the Official Opening in March 2008. The South West Rose Group wish to express our thank all donors of material, roses and time WITH OUT ALL YOUR SUPPORT THIS Project would not have developed into the beautiful, Rose Garden that it is Today.  July 2008.
